(and there have been QUITE a few of them, lately!)

Lefkada, Greece. Alex's family owns a hotel there, so it has been pretty much decided that we will go pay it a visit someday. It looks like a nice little island, and it would be so cool to explore and relax there. I also am captivated by the idea of perhaps renting a moped? But maybe that's all the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants talking.

Other obsessions in the past few (what, only 2 weeks or so? Ha.) include:
Scrapbooking
The Sims 3
Bengal Cats
Cats
Humane Societies and Rescue operations
Goldfish
Bengal cats again
Scrapbooking again
Cheese and crackers
MOVIES (DC has ruined me!)
Wedding things (it is consuming my LIFE.) Well, not really. For being a maid of honor and bridesmaid, I'd say I'm managing quite well.

My class went very well last week, and I even managed to almost get my take-home exam done later on the day of our in-class ID-ing exam. (Must go pick it up to see my score!) Josh was visiting and wanted company in the internet cafe across the street, so I dragged my butt over there and got quite a bit done! I don't really think we've spent all that much time together, alone, before, and it was pretty enjoyable, I must say. I just have a few more questions and then I'm done! And it's not even due till next week Tuesday. :)

I've been watching a ton of movies, too, relative to my time previous to Australia, because everyone knows that's pretty much all I did there, haha. Have re-watched a bunch, but have also newly seen all of Interview with the Vampire, The Omen, followed shortly by Little Women to create good feelings in the aftermath of The Omen..., Marley & Me, and some others, I'm sure. I have been taking them out from the little library RaeChel has in her room--quite convenient! Maybe I will work out a payment system?

Classes start next week, and I have to work out when I will do project and paid work with my professor. This weekend is RaeChel's birthday, and I'm really excited to go out with her and friends! I also want to go out for my birthday next week. I want to try new drinks.

I hope to pick up my things for Dasha's wedding any day now, and am eager to see how the dress and shoes work together. I am also anxious to get my dress for Jessica's wedding, but I have NO idea when that will be!

Tomorrow I move more things back to the apartment from home with the parents. I think that's all for now--I'm excited for the weekend!

With Christmas money from my aunt, I have purchased a WHOLE BUNCH of scrapbooking supplies! I am going to take them and all my other stuff with me when I move back to Madison tomorrow, and I will scrapbooooook!

The first project will be to start my Australia album. I have a nice orange-y silk covered book for it, and some nice papers and STICKERS, the best of which are glittery alphabet stickers!! omg, love.

I also bought a book and a set of papers with which to start an album for next year's apartment with Alex. :)

Christmas was good, got to see lots of friends.

But for now, after reporting the exciting scrapbooking developments, I need to sleep!

Hmm.

I ran errands today! I got TWO pairs of new jeans. One is just a pair of jeans, but the OTHER. Oh, the other. The other is a pair of wide leg jeans with a denim tie at the waist. And they are AWESOME. And they are not one, but TWO sizes smaller than the pants I have now. But not being hung up on sizes, cause the other pair is supposedly bigger than those. You know, sizes suck anyway.

I also made a first journey to the new ShopKo and wasn't too impressed. However, I bought my nephew a Christmas present for my mom to give him-playdoh fun factory with a case of 10 colors. Oh yeah. I am totally going to be all over that with him on Christmas Day, I can tell you RIGHT now.

Next in this boring entry is a trip to Walgreens, where I had some photos developed. Nothing big, just some ones since I've been home. Walgreens is the same as I remember. I also purchased razors. It's a shame that the disposable entire razors cost less than the handles with refillable blades. So much better for the environment, yet I am a poor student. Once I have a job again, I will SPLURGE on razor handles with disposable blades.

Speaking of a job, I have secured one back at the lab with Prof. Macguidwin. Should be okay. I really didn't like field work, but it's winter, so I should be good for a solid 3 months or so. Sieving dirt is manageable, as long and I have periodic breaks, I think! And it'll be good experience. Gotta try to keep my good records with sterile technique and experiments up!

It will be nice to get an iPod. I suspect this will be a birthday/Christmas present from Alex. I will cruise around to awesome music of my choosing.

In other news, I have been making cookies, dipping cookies in chocolate, making truffles, and baking/putting together gingerbread houses. And wrapping presents!

Tomorrow is a jaunt to get our first real LIVE Christmas tree, and my mom's handbell concert Sunday, which I will try to harangue Andy into coming to.

... in 10 minutes or less! Because that's how much time I've got left on my internet time code at the hostel hook up cafe.

To be fair, though, I suppose it's not really the end. I will be able to stay in touch very well, I feel, through the internet. Morgan and I just chatted for quite awhile as though we were right next to each other rather than at least 6 hours driving distance apart. It will be different with time zones and time to give to sitting on the computer, as it'll be limited once I'm back home with friends and family, but there will still be time. We will make time.

I said goodbye to the last of the kids I know from college last night, Claire and Aileen. The previous night was when I said goodbye to Yash and Gaia... very sad. And then the sky opened up and Alex and I sprinted home to our hostel in ankle deep water.

I have plans to call Ruth and Morgan on Thanksgiving next week to make Ruth feel a bit better about missing it. I'm looking forward to it. :)

I can't wait to get home and see everyone. The plane ride is NOT something I'm looking forward to... but it's a necessary evil. I just hope all goes well with travel!!

I'm anxious to get going... bue my flight isn't for at least 5 more hours... I will try to get to the airport early, but what will I do after internet runs out?? :j I will survive.

I guess that's all for now, and I'll see all you Badgers soon!

Loves from Oz! I'll miss it!

Tonight is my third night in Sydney! The hostel is nice- they have a cool internet cafe thing going on. The room is a 10 share, but the beds are pretty comfortable. It gets cold at night, and it's sooo nice to cuddle up in my blanket.

Last night we went to a ballet at the Opera House! It was great! The show was split into 3 parts- the first wasn't that great, but the second was HOT. It was about Semele, the mortal Jupiter in Roman mythology has an affair with. Soooo sexy. :D And the third was abstract and weird, but cool to watch. The Opera House was gorgeous at night. German(!)Alex and I couldn't tear ourselves away.

We went to the aquarium today which was fantastic! They had tunnels under the fish! AAHHH! :D

Tomorrow is the Blue Mountains-we're going to hop on a train and see how it goes!

Guess that's it for now... have to get the hostel staff to cut my broken lock off my locker. :(
» A post before leaving college
Well, here I am! About to head out for the airport to Sydney, as soon as Andrew, my ride, is ready! I'm looking forward to it, but I think emotionally I've already wrapped up a bit, and am ready to go home at the same time. However, I am glad to have an extra few days with Gaia, Alex, Yash, and everyone else!

We had a fun little time last night. Aileen, Gaia, Ruth and I went out to the city to get some dinner. We ended up at a place on Queen Street calleed Jo-Jo's that was somewhat like classy fast food. We all had steaks, and they were all very good! Then we met Morgan and walked to get him some food, then wandered around trying to digest and make room for pancakes(!). We ended up in the City Botanic Gardens, which seemed fairly nice, even though it was so dark. Then we got in contact with Andrew and arranged to meet him at the Pancake Manor.

The Pancake Manor is an old church that has been converted into a restaurant that sells... pancakes! Also milkshakes and some other stuff, too. I think there was a bar in the basement, as well? Anyway, they had normal breakfast pancakes, but they also had gourmet pancakes. Morgan, Ruth and I shared the Chocolate Jewels order- 2 chocolate pancakes (like CAKE, really!!), chocolate and vanilla ice cream, and chocolate sauce. It was, of course, awesome. Andrew tackled a whole one by himself, and Aileen and Gaia both got a shortstack with ice cream. :) A good dessert!

Then we took the bus back, Gaia chatting away in Italian on her phone, Morgan falling asleep. Gaia and Aileen went back to Gaia's room right away, but we stayed up in Ruth's room for a bit. We watched some silly videos, used the internet, chatted with Sarah and said goodbye, then went to bed. I made a pretty nice little nest on the floor, I thin, and it wasn't all that uncomfortable. :)

I'm trying to use up Morgan's internet quota for him, but am finding it difficult, as youtube doesn't work on this computer. :(

This morning was hard.

I guess that's all for now! Maybe I'll post from Sydney, but if I don't, I'll see you all soon!
» On completion of studies!
That's it! Done with study at the University of Queensland, St. Lucia! And things are mostly packed... just have some odds and ends. The room has been inspected, and all is well. Will be receiving a crap load of money from security deposit that I didn't know about before getting a cash advance on the credit card... Xo . But that's ok... I pretty much officially have my dad's blessing to spend money! Haha.

My friend Andrew is being AWESOME and driving me to the airport! It would have cost at LEAST 50 dollars to take a taxi, but he said it wouldn't be a problem and would gladly take $20! Win!

Discovered the changing random order desktop wallpaper function and set it to my silly pictures folder. Hehe, makes me laugh. I have it set to change every minute! :D

Still need to mail off my books. That's next on my list, after perhaps finding someone to walk with me. May do some laundry tomorrow... going to a housewarming tonight for Britt and her friend from home in Canada, so need to go get a little gift for that, too. Tomorrow... who knows! Am hoping to go to the Pancake Manor and obtain chocolate pancakes and ice cream!! Am checking out of college, but sneakily stashing luggage in Andrew's room, and sleeping on Ruth's floor that night. It will be fuuun. Andrew and Gaia will still be around as well as Ruth, and Aileen is sleeping on Gaia's floor and Morgan will stay on Ruth's floor as well. Bwaha!

Next week is a fun time in Sydney with Gaia, Alex, Yash, Aileen, Claire, and Becky! The first 5 and I will go to see a ballet at the Opera House, and we're planning to sample nightlife and see all the sights. I want to hit Chinatown and the Blue Mountains, and the Uni of Sydney. It will be excellent, and I'm happy to spend more time with them! It will be death leaving Ruth, though, and Morgan...

I am excited to come home.

I am so happy I came.

» TORnado, exposed?!
This is not backed up by any evidence as of yet. But it was recently put to me, when I mentioned I had been super clumsy today--"Are you going to have your period soon?"

That would SO make sense! It DOES seem to be a less constant occurrence that I become the Tornado, and maybe it IS cyclical?? I will have to make note! I guess it happens to lots of girls.

The other day, I attended a barbeque that a guy from one of my classes threw with his wife. He was returning to school- he's about 40. He was in both my conservation bio class and my terrestrial environment class, and was in the Gym-pie group when were were kicking it around on Fraser Island. He invited all the Gym-pies and some other kids from the classes. He and his wife provided everything- we had deLICious steaks with mushrooms and onions, omg, a nice vegetable salad, wine and beer, STEAK (sorry, I'm wanting some red meat... mmm), and a great chocolate cheesecake for desert. His sister and her kids were also visiting, so we had a grand old time just chatting and enjoying ourselves. He does some landscape photography (www.greghoogstrate.com) and showed us a bit of his work. His wife had made anzac biscuits for us to all take home, and she drove us to the train station at the end of the night to drop us off! It was so great! Ahh! Such lovely people.

Right now I am, surprise surprise, supposed to be writing a paper. It is to be 4000 words on the weed *Lantana camara* L. Yaay. I have quite a few sources and have gleaning information from them. It's been going pretty well. I just wish I could fast-forward to that point at which it is done and I don't have to worry about it anymore. Le sigh.

It's not that I don't want to come home. I just don't want my time here to be over yet.

My heart is breaking.

This just in--a "swot" in Britain is someone who works really hard at their studies. So, a vacation for studying really hard. Yay. So far, I've gotten a little done on my first paper. I haaaate paaaapers. Grar.

We had a study abroad session to cover all our leaving issues, including reverse culture shock. This is gonna SUCK. It made be pretty sad. Also, they were giving away winter hats with the UQ logo on them, but I didn't win one. Shade. Although, Yash and Gaia did, so that's nice.

Yesterday was such a nice experience. Ruth's grandparents are in Rotary, and they have friends all over the world, apparently. A couple in Brisbane invited her and some friends to spend the day on their boat- I was very glad she asked me! In addition, Jo (Zambia), Ditte (Denmark), and Morgan (Australia) ended up coming too. They provided lots of snacks and lunch, and beer and champagne too! They had a super nice sailboat, with bunks and a kitchen and all. We headed out from Moreton Bay into Horseshoe Bay off of Peel Island and dropped anchor, and spent the day chatting and jumping into the water. It was pretty clear and a very nice blue green. We saw dolphins, too, and played some music to try to get them to come back. :) Ruth and Ditte (Morgan helped too) taught me to dive! And I did pretty well! The weather was gorgeous. It was so... wonderful.

Tonight we had a photo swap night. Everyone left far too soon for my liking. I don't want to go to bed! It's 11, and I want to hang out more! With some people specifically... but everyone's tired or studying. And I said I'd get up for a 6:30 am walk with Ruth and Morgan. Le sigh. We'll see how that is.

I think that's all I can say.
» What the hell.
Okay. It is official. My cousin is totally going to be firmly entrenched on my shit list if he does not respond to my latest email. Is it so hard to respond to any of my attempts to contact him? Facebook, email, etc. Nope, nothing. I don't even know if I want to talk to him at Christmas on the phone if he doesn't write back- that's usually the only time we talk lately, and I don't even know if it happened the last few years. Just... wtf. We grew up together, we used to talk for HOURS online in middle school and high school, and then I guess things got a bit busy in college. His family stopped coming to visit mine when it was their turn shortly after high school started. I just don't know what I did wrong. :(

News from the Australian front: I am supposed to be writing a paper! AHH. I hate it! It's on gender and crap, surprise surprise. :p

Mid-semester break was good! Fraser Island was excellent. We got to swim in a new freshwater lake or creek everyday, saw dingoes, did some school work, explored the island... I even found a funnel web from a funnel web spider. The Sydney funnel webs are the most venemous things around, apparently. However, the spider wasn't at home- my professor got very excited and attempted to flush the thing out of its hole with water. I did get sick partway through the trip with what I think was heat and sun related. I couldn't do group work that night after dinner, and couldn't eat properly for awhile. Then, the next day, I threw up out the side of the vehicle, with a few more vehicles packed with kids from our class behind us, able to see it all. Excellent.

The next trip I took was with my friends Yash (NZ) and Alex (Germany) to Cairns. Gaia (Italy) met up with us there every so often. We finally got to... The Great Barrier Reef! It was expensive, but from the first time I put my face in the water to start snorkeling, I knew it was TOTALLY worth it! So many fish! There were great big parrot fish in gorgeous colors-purples and blues, with different colors between the scales. It was great to dive down a bit and check out corals and such close up. I LOVED it. Snorkeling is my new favorite thing. I loved it in Puerto Rico, too, despite the bad sunburn it got me, although this reef was much more ... vivid. Or something. I am absolutely snorkeling again-I hope to go during our revision period- a week of study before finals. It's called SWOTVAC. I know the "vac" part is short for "vacation" but I have no idea what "SWOT" is for.

Have been going out it seems quite a bit lately, although I know that's not entirely true-just been a few times in not a long amount of time. Thursday we went out to a bar called Birdee's, which had a pool and a hot tub. I guess someone always jumps in with or without clothes before the end of the night and gets kicked out. I had a grand old time, dancing away with my international buddies. I was really overcome on the dance floor just how much I liked them all. Excellent timing-6 weeks before I leave. Got a bit closer to one person in particular, which I think is a good thing.

We will all (well, a lot of us) have one last hurrah in Sydney before we leave. We'll spend 5 days or so exploring and enjoying the city together, and then we'll go our separate ways for the most part. Some will be going on to more travel, and some will be heading for home.

Gaia wants to come visit Madison, and Ruth (New Jersey) may stop by on a road trip across country. It would be nice to see Italy, something I've never really considered till Gaia. Could be nice. :) But I may have to take Alex with me!

I guess that's all for now- should get on with the writing...
» Paper=Journal Entry
So true!

Let's just say I didn't get the paper done for Friday. BAH! But it's going fairly well now, but I'm sure it'll get a pretty average grade. But all I need is it to pass! I think it's coming together reasonably well, though. Found a nice book on mythology that has the hero's journey mapped out with example of each stage from all different cultures included. I only really needed a few lines from it to quote in the paper... but I have no fun reading material, so I checked it out of the library and have read a few of the stories. Pretty cool! I also started reading the journal article I need to do my presentation on. It only needs to be 4 slides (MAX. INCLUDING the title slide.) but it'll still be kind of a pain. But no! Positive thinking! It will be easy-peasy. Have read a bit more in Silent Spring, but it's just depressing. :( I'm on the cancer chapter now. YES. Not really sure how to do my report on it yet... we'll see! I have to figure it out before Wednesday, afterall!

Went to the Glasshouse Mountains yesterday with seven other internationals. It was pretty nice. Kind of weird, as we got off the train and seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. Turns out, we discovered later, that the little shopping center and the restaurants and such were on the other side of the train tracks. We hiked along the road, Ditte (Denmark) and Alex (Germany) making friends along the way as they asked everyone we saw for directions. We came across a PINEAPPLE(!) FIELD. It was awesome! And I got to use "vegetatively propagated" in an everyday conversation. :D We finally got to our mountain of choice, Mt. Ngungun. At first I was like, oh, this is fine, it's just like climbing the stairs (60) to my room. But then it KEPT GOING. And got STEEPER. And I was like, omg, gonna die, I can't believe I just purchased an expensive adventure tour to do JUST THIS in about a month, and I got upset and it got harder because of it. But I kept at it, and I finally reached the top! And then I got over it and decided to try to get my heart going a bit more often to train for the adventure tour. (More on that later.) Anyway! The view from the top was lovely! We could see a few of the other mountains around us, as well as the ridge that was the base of the huge volcano that used to stand there. The mountains that are left, including the one we climbed, are lava plugs that didn't reach the surface and are the only things that remained after the volcano eroded. We ate lunch at the top, then explored a bit more. There were huge farms of macadamia nut trees at the base of our mountain. Then we decided it was time to head back down (quite a process) and go in search of ice cream. We found the town center and I got delicious strawberries before we hopped back on the train and headed home.

So, adventure tour. Becky and Ryan from UW got me interested in it. It's supposedly a more intense tour with long hikes. That's the only thing I'm really worried about. Well, that, and sleeping only in swags in the open-no tents. Seems a bit... Wolf Creek slasher film to me. Eeeeep. But! Saltwater crocs! WANT. And it will be great to see the north part of the country a bit. Just need to ramp up the activity level between now and then.

Things are going pretty fast now, it seems. Next week we leave for Fraser Island, and then it'll be midsemester break and Great Barrier Reef time! After that it's just 3 more weeks of class, oh my gosh! Remember when you were 6 and a day seemed like FOREVER?? Now a whole semester just goes by like that. We are old, my friends. Old.

Then I get to come home and laugh at all you for still being in school! :D LOVES! And misses...
» Gold Coast-er
It's been quite awhile. I guess the first thing I should say before I forget is that the Hawaii plans are off. Just wasn't going to work with my current travel tickets. Ah well. But, for better or worse, I will be coming back on November 21st. I say for better or for worse because the truth is, I'm not sure if I'll want to come back then. The country is so huge and I'm hardly going to be able to see any of it! Don't get me wrong. I do want to come back. I want to go home so badly sometimes and don't want to be here at all. But it's getting better now, and I hear about all the trips the other international kids are going to be taking after the term is over. I'm going to Sydney with some friends as soon as exams end, but that's it and I'll be gone. They're all going to Melbourne, Cairns, New Zealand, and some even to Perth... I'm just not sure how I'll feel 2 months from now. I could extend the trip, but I REALLY want to be home for Thanksgiving. I just don't want to be resenting the fact that I'm in Wisconsin while trying to enjoy my family and friend time. A part of me feels that I'll be relieved to be home... but who knows. BAH! Any former study abroads have advice?

However, there is a lot still for me to do here! I am going to Cairns for just a few days during the mid-semester break, and I will snorkel on the reef (!) and jungle surf! One of my field trips is during the break as well-a 5 day trip to Fraser Island! It's an entirely sand island, yet it supports a rainforest! Plus DINGOES. There will be day and weekend trips on the fly, I'm sure, and I'm trying to organize an adventure tour to Kakadu National Park in the north.

My friend Yash and I took a mostly impromptu trip to Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast on Monday, which was pretty cool. The beach was so nice. The sand was gorgeous, and so were the waves. ... but they were pretty vicious. :D It rained briefly for about 5 minutes, which supplied us with a full rainbow over the ocean for quite awhile. It was kind of a ... seedy place, but cool to see. I bought a $16 hamburger, which turned out to almost be worth it, I think. It had bacon on it, as well as a fried egg and... PINEAPPLE!!! And WOW, turns out pineapple on a hamburger is INCREDIBLE. I bought an Australian flag towel that I'm very pleased with and another nice shot glass to add to my collection. Now I've got one from Gold Coast, Lone Pine, South Carolina, one with me and Jessica on it, and 2 from Forts Alex has been to. :D They are excellent for keeping small items in on tables.

Also big was the Union College Ball which I had a very nice dress for and drank way too much. It was super fun but lead to some perhaps unfortunate but overall interesting happenings. Ah! Life at college.

This week I have an midterm exam (called mid-semesters here) and I'm *supposed* to have a paper due Friday, but the date has been moved back to Tuesday. This is both good and bad, because now I'm going to want to slack a bit, but I have another paper AND a presentation due Wednesday. Ugh. So I'll probably try to get it done for Friday anyway. It's on Olympic athletes as Australian heroes. Yay.

Speaking of all these breaks has got me thinking about Spring break. WHAT SHOULD WE DO, GUYS?!

When I get back, we need to go to Perkins at 2:30 in the morning and get goooood food. Maybe pancakes? Preferably after a night of dancing!
» Classes so far!
So I'm a few weeks into classes here, I suppose I can do a run-down on them so far.

I LOVE my Australia's Terrestrial Environment class so far. We've been doing paleontology, geology, and climate, and have just started plants. This is the class that I get to go on all those neat field trips with. One to Brisbane Forest Park, coming up this week, one to the Australia Zoo at the end of term, and a five day trip to Fraser Island during the mid-semester break!

Conservation Biology is pretty hard, and we have to do discussion stuff. I don't like it too much, but it's okay, I guess. :( We are reading a novel that we get to pick and doing a report on it, so that can't be too bad.

Weed Science- my books just arrived recently, so I need to catch up a bit! But it seems pretty interesting so far, and I was actually pretty excited while doing my readings!

Australia's Popular Culture. Meh. A lot of theory crap like in the women's studies courses. Not that it's crap, per se, I'm just sick of it. We do get to watch movies in it, though. My first assessment is a 1000 word paper containing 3 essays, due Friday. Blah...

There are some really nice group fitness classes here, and I'm going to go buy a pass for them on Monday, I think. :D I'm especially excited for yoga- I did a free class to try it out a little while ago, and it really helped my back.

I have booked my tickets for Cairns for over the mid-semester break, and WILL be seeing the Great Barrier Reef! Sick! I'm also going to try to do some snorkeling around Brisbane through the university, as well as see what sounds like a really nice botanical garden, take in some museums, and *hopefully* check out Lamington National Park.

In other exciting news, Alex and I are planning to meet up in Hawaii for a few days after I'm done with classes and then go home together in time for Thanksgiving!!! Eeee! He found a nice military hotel and I'm getting some advice from Andy where would be best to go on Oahu- what he's told me about already sounds GREAT!

I went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary yesterday! Fed some pretty lorikeets, which was kind of scary as they tended to swoop. We watched a sheepdog show which was excellent. It was really cool to see how well the dogs kept the sheep in line. In the second "act," two littler dogs kept the sheep going the right way in their pen by jumping right on top of them. The barn animals were pretty fun too, with cute lambs and PUPPIES!

Of course we also saw the kangaroos, which were pretty lazy, but very soft. Next we went on to the main attraction-the koalas! They're all right. I held one for a picture, and it was pretty cute.

I got the file sharing program for my college up and running and it's GREAT. There's chat as well as sooo many movies, tv shows, and songs. It's also good for sharing pictures and the like. Only one episode of Buffy, though. :( Oh well... Looks like there's plenty of Firefly, though, and some Avatar. OMG and Sliders, more Avatar, Robot Chicken... holy crap. Ok, ok.

"I reckon" is used more commonly than "I think."

Blah, I don't want to study.
